Eugenie DeLand's watercolor poster puts the Statue of Liberty at the center of a wartime sales pitch, with the slogan "Sunrise or sunset own a Liberty Bond" printed across it. Made in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it was one of many posters meant to persuade ordinary Americans to lend their savings to the government through Liberty Bonds. The text describes the bond as the best security in the world, paying interest and easy to sell, and it sets a promotional goal for the national drive. Look closely at the flags and the statue's torch, which link the campaign to patriotic duty and to the nation's most recognizable symbol of liberty.
