The Statue of Liberty appears on this French war-loan poster, which asks readers to subscribe to the national loan at the Banque Nationale de Crédit. Printed in Paris in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it presents the statue as a symbol of a cause the two nations shared. The poster is signed "SEM," the pseudonym of the illustrator Georges Goursat, who produced many lithographs of this kind for French wartime campaigns to raise money from the public.
