This French war-loan poster from 1917 sets the Statue of Liberty beside a call to subscribe to France's national loan, a rare case of the monument appearing in European wartime propaganda rather than as an American emblem. Its title, "For the freedom of the world," casts France's war effort and its financing as part of a shared cause, and the year matters: the United States entered the war in April 1917, so the image spoke to a newly joined ally. The poster is signed "SEM," the pen name of the caricaturist Georges Goursat, and was printed by Devambez in Paris. Its lithographed color and bold composition are typical of the large public posters that were pasted across French cities to sell war bonds.
