Few wartime posters pair the Statue of Liberty with a call to keep airplanes flying, but this Pennsylvania WPA lithograph does just that under the slogan "Keep 'em flying." Produced between 1941 and 1943, around the time the United States entered World War II, it reflects the federal art projects' effort to turn graphic design toward national defense. The record also lists aircraft carriers and air operations among its subjects, linking the statue's symbol of liberty to the naval and aerial power the country was rapidly building. Posters like this were meant to be taken in at a glance on streets and in factories, so their bold color and simple imagery carried the message.
