Visitors to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 could see the copper hand and torch of the Statue of Liberty, a fragment of the monument France was building as a gift to the United States. This stereograph, issued by the Centennial Photographic Company, was one of many cards that let viewers see the object in depth through a stereoscope. The hand was displayed to publicize the project and raise money for the pedestal in New York, which was still unfunded. Through the stereoscope, the outstretched torch takes on a sense of mass that flat exhibition photographs could not easily convey.
