Few objects at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition drew crowds like the colossal hand and torch of Liberty, a fragment of the statue that Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was designing for New York Harbor. The copper arm and flame were as much a fundraising device as a display, meant to build support for paying for the statue's pedestal. Issued by the Centennial Photographic Company, this stereograph was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth and bulk that a flat image could not convey.
