The view looks straight down from the torch, across the crown's spikes and the top of the statue's head, the kind of perspective few visitors ever got. Climbing the arm to the torch was once possible, and the torch's gallery was closed to the public after 1916, when a munitions explosion on nearby Black Tom Island damaged the statue and the access routes were shut. Photographs like this one, taken from the sculpture itself, document the copper skin and the riveted iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel's company. Black-and-white views of this kind are useful for seeing the sheer scale of the figure up close.
