Gouverneur Kemble Warren, the Union engineer who first noticed that Little Round Top had been left undefended on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, is shown here at the signal station on the hill's summit. The drawing was engraved for the Century Company's *Battles and Leaders of the Civil War*, a multi-volume series published in the late 1880s that gathered firsthand accounts from veterans of both armies. Warren's quick decision to send troops to the rocky crest helped secure the Union left flank during the fighting that day, and the scene captures the bare, boulder-strewn ground where that struggle took place.
