A Ku Klux Klan gathering at the Sylvan Theater on August 8, 1925, is set against the grounds near the Washington Monument, which makes this one of the more striking scenes in the National Photo Company collection. The Klan was at the height of its national influence in the mid-1920s, drawing members and holding public events well beyond the South. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's streets, ceremonies and people in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating soften some fine detail, but the overall scene remains clear.
