Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C., is the setting for this July 1925 glass negative, which the National Photo Company labeled "Serenity," though that title is unverified. The park's formal terraces and long cascading water feature were still taking shape in the 1920s. The National Photo Company was a commercial studio that recorded the capital's streets, monuments and public life for clients. The Library of Congress received the plate as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Look for the streaks and small blemishes across the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
