Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1911 was a town of nearly ninety years, set apart from Arundel in 1821 and named for the port at the mouth of the Kennebunk River. Out at Cape Porpoise, a harbor within the town's bounds, fishing boats went after lobster and groundfish, and their catch moved over wharves and through local dealers. The annual town meeting settled matters of roads, schools, and the upkeep of the bridges that joined the two banks of the river. Older residents who remembered a busier waterfront measured the town's prospects by how many summer families would come back each July.
