Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1911 was a seacoast village at the mouth of the Kennebunk River, a place that had long lived by shipbuilding and fishing and was now turning toward summer visitors. The town's shipyards had turned out schooners and coasting vessels through much of the nineteenth century, but that trade had dwindled by the early 1900s. Families increasingly relied on well-to-do guests from Boston and other cities who spent the warm months in hotels and cottages along the shore. The Boston and Maine Railroad served the region and brought these summer people in from the south and west. Fishermen, boatbuilders, and storekeepers still worked on the tides, sharing the village with seasonal residents whose arrival each summer changed its rhythm.
