Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1911 sat on the tidal Kennebunk River, and its daily life ran by the tides and the seasons. Winters brought wood cutting, ice harvested from local ponds, and goods hauled by horse and wagon over unpaved roads. Automobiles were still uncommon on the country roads of York County, so a motorist passing through could draw a crowd of children and idle men. Maine had been dry under statewide prohibition since 1851, a law that shaped the taverns and hotel dining rooms alike and gave temperance societies a loud voice in town affairs.
