Glassy Mountain, in the upcountry near Greenville, South Carolina, held a United States Army rifle range in 1918, while the nation was fighting the First World War. Greenville's economy rested on cotton textile mills and rail connections, and the Army built up training grounds in the area, including Camp Sevier, where local draftees and volunteers prepared for service in France. Soldiers who fired on the range were learning a skill that would matter in the trenches within months. The war ended in November, but the influenza epidemic that swept the country that fall also reached Greenville and the nearby camps, crowding hospitals and disrupting daily life.
