Rather than looking at the city from across the water, this engraving places the viewer among the sunken wrecks at the harbour mouth and looks back toward the channel. Elias Durnford, a British engineer, drew the scene, and Peter Canot engraved it for the London publisher Thomas Jefferys in 1764. The Spanish had scuttled their own ships to block the entrance during the British siege of 1762, and the caption identifies the vessels and structures, making the print a record of the obstacles British forces faced when they took Havana.
