Three writers share the frame in this January 1914 photograph of an authors' evening held in support of woman suffrage. W. E. B. Du Bois, the sociologist and editor of *The Crisis*, sits with muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens and poet Edwin Markham, author of "The Man with the Hoe." The campaign for women's voting rights was gaining ground across the country at the time, and Du Bois's presence suggests the NAACP's wider interest in reform causes. Paul Thompson's photograph preserves a moment when prominent writers lent their names and public voices to a political cause.
