Billings, Montana, is the subject here, shown on a map dated 1904, a period when the town was still young and growing fast. The city had been founded only a generation earlier as the Northern Pacific Railway pushed west, and its rail connections turned it into a shipping point for cattle, wool and grain from the surrounding plains and valleys. A map from this moment captures a community whose streets and blocks were still being laid out around the tracks. Maps like this one are useful for tracing how railroad towns in the Northern Plains took shape.
