Missoula sits where the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Blackfoot rivers meet, a location that made it a natural hub once the Northern Pacific Railway reached the town in 1883. This 1891 map captures the community during a period of rapid growth, when rail lines, lumber mills and new streets were reshaping the Hellgate Valley. Maps of this type were often drawn in a bird's-eye perspective, showing buildings and streets as if seen from an angle above the town, which makes them useful for understanding how a young western community was laid out.
