This bird's-eye view of Minneapolis, Minnesota, drawn in 1891 by Andrew M. Smith, shows the city from an angled aerial vantage, a format that was popular for American cities in the late 1800s. The view centers on the Mississippi River and the falls at St. Anthony, which powered the sawmills and flour mills that made Minneapolis one of the country's leading milling centers. Panoramic maps like this one were built from careful street-level surveys and were often sold to local residents and businesses, who liked seeing their own buildings and neighborhoods rendered in detail. Today the map serves as a snapshot of a city in the middle of its rapid growth.
