Drawn from an elevated oblique angle, this 1879 panoramic map shows Minneapolis as a dense grid of streets, churches, and commercial blocks along the Mississippi, with the falls at St. Anthony as the city's industrial heart. Albert Ruger drew the view, and the firm of Beck & Pauli printed it as a lithograph for the publisher J. J. Stoner, whose company issued many such city views in the late 1870s and 1880s. By then Minneapolis was the country's leading flour-milling center, and the falls powered the mills that gave the city its nickname, "Mill City." Maps like this one were both promotional and practical, and they record the layout of a booming city at a moment of rapid growth.
