Drawn in ink, wash, watercolor, and graphite, this perspective view presents the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as a finished composition rather than a photograph of the site. Architects used such renderings to show clients and builders how a building's mass, ornament, and setting would look in three dimensions. The Library's main building, now named for Thomas Jefferson, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed in 1897. Its Beaux-Arts facades and dome made it one of the capital's most admired civic buildings.
