The ferry terminal shown here stands at the foot of Market Street, where for decades commuters crossed San Francisco Bay by boat from Oakland, Alameda, Sausalito, and other shore towns. The Ferry Building, finished in 1898 with its tall clock tower, was a major landing on the waterfront until the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge drew most riders away in the late 1930s. The caption card gives no date or maker's name, but woodcuts of working harbors like this one were popular with early twentieth-century printmakers, who favored bold black-and-white lines.
