Photographed in the late 1890s, this front elevation shows the Library of Congress as it rose on Capitol Hill, before the main building was known as the Jefferson Building. Congress had outgrown its quarters inside the Capitol, and the new structure, with its classical, Renaissance-inspired design, opened to readers in 1897 to house the nation's books under one roof. Look closely at the columns, sculpture, and carved ornament across the facade, which reflect how much the young republic wanted its cultural institutions to project permanence and learning.
