The Smith homestead in Algonac, Michigan, a river town on the St. Clair River north of Detroit, survives here as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced numbered views of towns, landscapes and buildings across the country in the early 1900s. The negative's markings show its catalog number and a later history: it was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Because the picture is a dwelling rather than a famous landmark, it offers a plain record of an ordinary rural home from the years between 1910 and 1920.
