The Cambria Iron Works, the industrial heart of Johnstown, is the focus of this view of the town after the 1889 flood. On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam upstream gave way, sending a torrent down the Conemaugh Valley that killed more than 2,000 people. The mills were the town's economic engine, and the flood left their buildings and yards wrecked, showing how completely the community's livelihood depended on iron and steel. The print was made by the firm Langill & Darling and registered for copyright in 1889, which suggests it was issued soon after the disaster for a public eager to see the damage.
