This view shows the Cambria Iron Works in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, when the mill was the center of the town's economy. The Cambria Iron Company, which ran the works along the Conemaugh River, employed a large share of the valley's workers, and its furnaces and rolling mills shaped the city's growth in the later 1800s. The record notes that this may be a reproduction of a painting and credits G.M. Greene with the copyright, though those details are unverified. The image predates the Johnstown Flood of May 1889, which broke through the South Fork dam upstream and swept through the valley, making this a useful picture of the works before that disaster.
