The debris piled against the warehouse of the Cambria Iron Works shows how the flood of May 31, 1889, reached the mills along the Conemaugh River. The South Fork Dam, upstream in the hills, gave way that afternoon, and a wall of water rushed down the valley into Johnstown, carrying railroad cars, houses, and timber. Many of the works' buildings were left standing, but they were blocked by wreckage that the water had driven into them. The card credits the photographic firm Langill & Darling, though the date and attribution are unverified, so the picture is best read as a record of the flood's aftermath in the city's industrial district.
