Fog drifting through the gorge is the detail that sets this view apart from the sunlit overlooks that dominate most Grand Canyon pictures of the period. The print comes from the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm known for its hand-tinted and photochrome views of American scenery made around 1900 to 1910, when the canyon was becoming a destination for rail travelers and tourists. Its catalog number, 018225, places it within that commercial output. Landscapes like this one, showing the canyon half-veiled in mist, were prized for their atmosphere and remain a useful record of how the rim looked to visitors a century ago.
