The fog in this view is the detail that sets it apart from the many clear-sky Grand Canyon scenes the Detroit Publishing Company sold. Its caption card, catalogued as No. 18224, labels the subject simply as a fog effect over the canyon, and the record notes that the original negative is missing and the date is an estimate between 1898 and 1914. The Detroit Publishing Company was a major commercial photographer of the American West in those years, issuing hand-colored and tinted views for tourists and railroad promoters who were drawn to the canyon's dramatic scale. Mist and cloud lying in its depths gave photographers a rarer, moodier subject than the usual sunlit overlooks.
