Three animals, which the title tentatively calls donkeys, appear in this c1900 view of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, with a question mark showing that the cataloguers were not certain of the species. The image was copyrighted by the photographer F.H. Maude, and that registration is noted in the record. Around 1900, burros and mules were working animals in the canyon country, hauling supplies, mining gear and visitors along steep trails, so pack animals were a familiar part of life there. The hedged title is worth noticing, since early photographs were often labeled quickly and revised later.
