Temple of Isis is one of the many buttes and spires that rise from the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon, and its name comes from the early surveyors and travelers who likened the stone formations to the temples of ancient Egypt. The Santa Fe Railway brought visitors to the South Rim from 1901, and by the 1920s photographers were producing scenic views like this one for tourists eager to take home the canyon's grand scale. The notation of copyright to A.J. Baker shows the picture was registered as a published work, part of a commercial trade in canyon views.
