Roberts dated this view of Gaza precisely, to March 21, 1839, and the city's long history as a coastal crossroads gives the scene its weight. He sketched it during his 1838 to 1839 journey through Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land, and Louis Haghe later transferred the drawing to stone for *The Holy Land*, which London publisher F.G. Moon issued in parts from 1842 to 1845. Gaza had been a stopping point for caravans and armies for thousands of years, and its place in the Bible, including the story of Samson carrying off the city gates, drew travelers and readers alike. The color version was meant to give European audiences a sense of the light and surfaces they would never see firsthand.
