The column shown here is one of the Hathor-headed capitals on the portico of the Temple of Dandara (Dendera) in Egypt, drawn in its restored state. The temple was dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love, music and joy, and most of its surviving structure dates to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. This color lithograph was issued around 1887 as plate 7 in volume 1 of Samuel August Binion's *Ancient Egypt or Mizraim*, a work that brought such monuments to American readers. Notice how the carved face of the goddess crowns the column, a design that marks the temple at a glance.
