Winter Haven, in Polk County, Florida, was a young citrus town in 1919, roughly eight years after its incorporation in 1911. Orange and grapefruit groves surrounded its lakes, and the packing houses and rail sidings that moved fruit to northern markets were the center of local work. Winter Haven sat on the rail lines that linked central Florida's growers to the ports and to buyers in the Northeast and Midwest, and its population was small enough that most residents knew the grove owners, merchants, and railroad agents by name. Burgert Brothers, a photography firm based in Tampa, made many panoramic views of Florida towns in these years, and this one records the settlement as its residents would have recognized it at the end of the First World War.
