Haines City, in Polk County on Florida's central ridge, was a citrus town in 1919, and its fortunes followed the orange and grapefruit groves that surrounded it. Railroad lines running through the town carried crates of fruit north to markets, which made the depot and packing houses the center of local commerce. Growers were still recovering from the severe freezes of the 1890s that had wiped out many early groves, and they had replanted with an eye toward the wider national market. The town was small enough that most residents would have known the packing houses, the rail yard, and the grove owners by name. Just a year after the armistice that ended the First World War, the community was looking ahead to the land speculation and rapid growth that would sweep Central Florida later in the decade.
