Pensacola, Florida, in 1909 was a port city whose economy rested on yellow pine lumber, naval stores such as turpentine and resin, and the shipping that carried them out of Pensacola Bay. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad had linked the city to the wider South decades earlier, and the Pensacola Navy Yard added a steady federal payroll and a strong military presence. The plaza, laid out in the Spanish colonial era and still called by its old Spanish name, served as the open civic space at the center of town, where residents gathered for public occasions, markets, and band concerts. Its shaded grounds reflected a community that still measured itself by its long history under Spain, Britain, and the United States, and by the mills and wharves that drove its daily life.
