In 1909 Pensacola was still a Gulf port living off the forests that had made it famous, but the longleaf pine that once supported its lumber trade was being cut over, and the town's wealth increasingly depended on naval stores, shipping, and the small factories and shops that served them. Street railway lines carried residents between the business district and the growing residential neighborhoods, and the city's streets, wharves, and churches showed a town slowly expanding beyond its older core. Florida itself was in a period of political change, as the state's leaders debated how far to regulate the railroads and corporations that had reshaped its economy. For most people living in Pensacola that year, the town was a place of familiar bayfront routines, where the arrival of a steamer or a load of lumber still marked the rhythm of the week.
