St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1913 was a young Gulf Coast city of about two decades' standing, built on the railroad and winter tourism that drew northern visitors to the warm bay shore. Its founders had tied the town to the Orange Belt Railway, and the surrounding economy leaned on citrus groves, fishing, and a growing number of hotels and boarding houses. Florida's rail network had recently extended farther south, bringing more travelers into the state and giving the city's downtown a steady flow of visitors who expected entertainment after dark. A theater like the La Plaza on the commercial streets would have served both seasonal guests and the permanent residents, offering plays, films, and vaudeville in a town that still measured its growth in new storefronts and paved blocks.
