St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1913 was a small waterfront town of a few thousand residents on Tampa Bay, founded in the late 1880s by Russian-born promoter Peter Demens, who named it after the Russian city. Its economy leaned on winter visitors, who came by rail to stay in hotels and boarding houses, and on the citrus groves, fishing, and trade that moved through the bay. The town had been drawn into the state's real estate boom and was known to Floridians as a health resort with mild winters and a pier reaching out over the water. This street view shows a community still defined by its railroad connections and the steady arrival of tourists and new settlers.
