Grooming the horse" is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, merge into one image with apparent depth. The Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, printed it around 1919, and the firm was among the best-known American publishers of stereo cards in the 1910s. Horses still did much of the work on farms and in towns at that time, so daily care such as brushing and currying was a routine part of working life. Keystone cards were sold for parlor viewing and home instruction, and scenes like this one record ordinary labor that was soon to change as motor vehicles spread.
