Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative in 1909, this view belongs to a large group of horse show pictures from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of work built by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied images to newspapers. Horse shows were a major social event in the United States at the time, drawing owners, riders and spectators to display hunters, saddle horses and carriage teams. The title comes from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the exact event and location remain uncertain. Even so, the picture offers a useful glimpse of equestrian competition in the years before the automobile began to replace the horse in city life.
