Rather than the exterior or the rotunda, this stereograph shows a corridor outside the Senate chamber in the U.S. Capitol, a working passage rarely featured in popular views of the building. The card is attributed to W.M. Chase of Baltimore, though that credit comes from an older caption and has not been independently checked. Stereographs like this were made in pairs and viewed through a hand stereoscope, which gave parlor audiences a sense of depth and made the seat of government feel within reach.
