Taken in 1929, the year he took office, this portrait shows Charles Curtis standing on the Senate rostrum, the raised platform where the presiding officer sits above the chamber floor. Curtis had served as a Kansas senator and as Senate majority leader before Herbert Hoover chose him as running mate, making him the first vice president of substantial Native American ancestry. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded federal officials and public buildings during the period.
