Curtis LeMay stands in front of a map inside the U.S. Capitol, a cigar in hand, in this 1945 Acme news portrait taken in profile. The setting is worth noticing: the map and the cigar suggest a military briefing, a fitting backdrop for a commander whose B-29 bomber campaign against Japan had reshaped the air war that year. Acme's wire photographs were circulated to newspapers across the country, so pictures like this one reached readers quickly as the war in the Pacific approached its end.
