John Brown Gordon, the Georgia politician and former Confederate general, sits in this head-and-shoulders portrait turned toward the right, a pose that was common for formal studio work of the period. Gordon served in the U.S. Senate from 1873 to 1880 and again from 1891 to 1897, and he was also Georgia's governor from 1886 to 1890. The photograph dates from roughly 1880 to 1900, a span in which Gordon moved between state and national office and became one of the most visible figures of the postwar South. Portraits like this one were often used in newspapers, campaign material, and public collections, so they helped shape how voters and the nation saw such men.
