Few rooms in the Capitol combine a working office with such a close link to the legislative floor as the one set aside for the Vice President, and this print isolates its mantel, the carved fireplace piece that anchored the room. The Vice President presides over the Senate, so the room's location and furnishings reflected that official role. Glenn Brown's two-volume *History of the United States Capitol* recorded the building's interiors for later readers, and this view appears there as plate 76. The print carries no date, so its exact making is uncertain, but the restrained classical design fits the taste of the Capitol's early nineteenth-century interiors.
