A small sixth-plate daguerreotype, this portrait of an unidentified woman carries a pencil-scratched number, 213, on its back, a trace of the cataloging that followed its path into the Library of Congress. Its gold toning, applied after development, deepened the silver image and gave it a warmer cast while also helping protect the delicate surface. The plate was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington operation was among the most prominent of the era, and it was transferred from the U.S. War College in 1920. Daguerreotypes like this were popular from the mid-1840s through the 1850s, when a sitter could own a single, mirror-like portrait.
