A sixth-plate daguerreotype with gold toning, its back scratched with the number 213, shows the careful record-keeping of a busy studio. It was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady in the years before the Civil War, when sitting for a photographic portrait was still a fashionable novelty. Gold chloride toning strengthened the silver image and warmed its tones, a finishing step many studios used to help plates last longer. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and reached the Library of Congress in 1920.
