A woman and a girl sit together in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, and their identities are not recorded, so the picture rests on its details: the close pose and the hand-applied color. Between 1840 and 1860, colorists often brushed pigment onto the cheeks, lips and clothing of daguerreotypes, which otherwise appeared as silver-toned images on polished copper plates. The case numbers, cited to the Rinhart reference catalog, help date and identify the protective case that holds the plate. The Library of Congress acquired the piece in 1999 and keeps it in its daguerreotype collection.
