Pennsylvania Avenue, the ceremonial route between the Capitol and the White House, is the setting here, with a single bonus marcher pictured on it in July 1932. The men were World War I veterans who had come to Washington to press Congress for early payment of the bonus certificates promised to them in 1924, many of them living in makeshift camps with their families. The march drew national attention during a deep economic depression, and it ended in late July when federal troops cleared the largest encampment across the Anacostia River. The record's date and caption come from an old card and have not been independently verified.
